Welcome to your Short Narcissism Questionnaire.

Narcissism is generally understood as pronounced self-involvement (Freud, 1955). In psychological research it has been regarded as both, a personality trait and as a clinically relevant disorder (Hermann et al., 2018).

The most widely-applied measure of narcissism is the Narcissistic Personality Inventory 40 (NPI-40; Raskin & Hall, 1979). The NPI-16 was constructed as more economical, brief measures of narcissism (Ames et al., 2006; Gentile et al., 2013).  The NPI is not intended for use in diagnosing Narcissistic Personality Disorder.Rather, it is often said to measure "normal" or "subclinical" (borderline) narcissism (i.e., in people who score very high on the NPI do not necessarily meet all criteria for diagnosis with NPD).

In using this we to acknowledge and cite the original research (Ames, Rose, and Anderson, 2006) and Raskin and Terry (1988).

This inventory consists of a number of pairs of statements with which you may or may not identify. Consider this example:

A. I like having authority over people
B. I don't mind following orders

Which of these two statements is closer to your own feelings about yourself?  If you identify more with "liking to have authority over people" than with "not minding following orders", then you would choose option A.

You may identify with both A and B. In this case you should choose the statement which seems closer to yourself. Or, if you do not identify with either statement, select the one which is least objectionable or remote. In other words, read each pair of statements and then choose the one that is closer to your own feelings.
