This article in the New York Times described Australia as “ground zero for the climate catstrophe”. It stated that the fires had already burned anout 14.5 million acres, and that close to half a billion animals had been killed. It also pointed out that the fire season had only just started!
The article went on to say that Australia’s leaders defended the coal industry (said to be a big donor to both parties!) rather than the country! Australia was the 4th largest producer of coal in 2017 (International Energy Agency)
The Prime Minister Scott Morrison was heckled by locals in Cobargo NSWand criticised for maintaining there is no direct link between the fires and his climate policies – and for holidaying in Hawaii in Decemmber!.
On the 9th January the BBC reported that 1.2 million hectares in Victoria had been burned,
They also reported that 1,900 homes had been destroyed in NSW.

Scary stuff. Quite an opinionated article in the NY Times. Strong views on both sides as to how well it’s been handled. We don’t really understand what’s happening, but we wish everyone ‘down under’ well at a difficult time.
