7 Signs of Depression

If you or someone you know is dealing with a challenging situation and could benefit from additional support, consider talking to one of the 2,000 licensed online counselors at BetterHelp. Depression is a common form of mental illness that impacts over 15 million Americans.

Depression doesn’t look a certain way, and there are many types of it. Some examples of depression include Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Dysthymia and Seasonal Affective Disorder. Even though there are many forms of depression, some of the symptoms overlap. For example, many people with depression feel a sense of worthlessness. Depression hurts people internationally. It doesn’t discriminate based upon race or gender.

Often depression is genetic meaning you are more likely to suffer from a form of depression if someone in your family has the illness. Some common signs of depression are: feeling lethargic, oversleeping, lack of appetite, social isolation, overeating and poor self-image. More severe symptoms of depression that require immediate attention are feeling suicidal, or not wanting to exist. If a friend or loved one says things like “I would be better off dead” or “no one would notice if I were gone,” these are dangerous statements, and they need help. Depression can be quite severe and even deadly if left untreated. Fortunately, there’s help available. A licensed therapist can support people who are suffering from depression and help them learn that there’s hope; they can make it through an extraordinarily painful time. Therapists understand depression and want to help people get well.

Our Questionnaire

The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) is a self-administered version of the PRIME-MD diagnostic instrument for common mental disorders. The PHQ-9 is the depression module.  It was tested extensively in 6 primary health clinics and 7 obstetrics-gynecology clinics and assessed thoroughly.  In addition to making criteria-based diagnoses of depressive disorders, the PHQ-9 is also a reliable and valid measure of depression severity. These characteristics plus its brevity make the PHQ-9 a useful clinical and research tool.

While considerable attention has focused on improving the detection of depression, assessment of severity is also important in guiding treatment decisions.

It has nine simple questions and is used to screen depression and monitor changes in signs/symptoms of depression.  It is appropriate to be used with individuals 12 years of age and older.

Take this test and assess yourself. Use any findings or suggestions and put them into your action plan and take steps to change your behaviour.
